Even though I have been a wino for many, many years and have been in the wine business for over 20 years, I have a rather geeky side when it comes to technology and economics. In full disclosure I actually have a degree in International Business, but I digress…

As an entrepreneur and business owner, one must always look at the glass half-full and have an almost “depressingly” cheerful outlook on life and the economy, which sometimes can be subdued by reality…but as we head into this fall, I wonder…it sure feels like it, but is the economy really improving? Why yes, it is, but…at least according to our sales and much anecdotal evidence…coming out of recessions we want quick fixes and unfortunately we must live with ups, downs and false starts before we see a broad based, job generating broad recovery. There is no real V straightline recovery. It is a myth. I am certainly seeing that in our business lately. After a slow summer, we actually finished August up 19% vs. last year and we have already booked more business in the first few days of September this year than we did most of September last year – I just don’t think I should expect that as a business owner every single month – the economy is improving, but has yet to attain a progressive and sustained improvement, it will take some false starts and hiccups…the good news now is only coming in fits and spurts, but that will soon enough turn into a broad based recovery in the next year or two…Sometimes I run into some really well written blog posts, that may not have much to do with wine, but they certainly make sense to look at when it comes to the broader picture and I feel it is important to share the pertinent information.

One such blog post comes to us today from the Economists View…and I will quote from the most salient excerpt from said post…

“One point is that recoveries are not generally linear affairs:

“Growth at the end of last year and early part of this year was stronger than I anticipated while economic activity in the second and third quarters seems weaker than I expected.

“But such ups and downs are not unusual during a recovery. A little history: following the 2001 recession, gross domestic product (GDP) grew at the annualized rate of 3.5 percent in early 2002. Growth then decelerated to about 2 percent for the next two quarters then fell to almost zero in the fourth quarter. Entering 2003, growth edged up to a little over 1.5 percent and then accelerated from there to a sustained period of relatively strong growth for two years.”

…Even in the rapid-growth, pre-1990 recoveries, there was generally a quarter or two of growth that underperformed. …”

The economic recovery is underway and it will take some time. We just cannot expect to go from first gear to overdrive right away. Patience and time is needed, but unfortunately many Americans are at the end of their ropes and don’t have either. I hope we can all hang on long enough to enjoy the ride back up…

I for one, am very happy that we are approaching the end of summer for quite a few reasons…I’ve really had just about enough (and then some…) of the damned heat; it is time for the kids to go back to school and the arrival of the cooler and more comfortable weather ushers our busy season – it has been a slower summer than usual, so the cool weather and increased wine sales are sure as hell welcome…

Like most Americans, I do have some Labor Day weekend plans to mark the unofficial end of summer…well the plans actually started last night with an awesome dinner at Cafe Panache, our favorite local restaurant near our house in New Jersey….and it happens to be BYOB – that is a bonus when you have a nice wine cellar…Joining us for dinner were our daughters and my in-laws in order to celebrate their 47th wedding anniversary and my 44th birthday. The food as always was incredibly tasty and delicious and we washed it all down with a bottle of J. Wilkes Pinot Noir Bien Nacido Q Block 2002, a bottle of Bergevin Lane Intuition 2005 and to top it all off some 2002 Hopler Trockebeerenauslese. Then I dropped of the girls at home and it was off to Dave’s to watch the last Jets preseason game…and they won, with old man Brunell throwing for two TDs! Sure can’t wait for the regular season to start…

Tonight the kids have a birthday party to go to, so my dear wife have a free night out and we are heading to my brother’s place, Flirt Sushi to meet some cousins and gorge ourselves with some of New Jersey’s best sushi…again its a BYOB – but I have yet to pick out the wines for this evening. Tomorrow is Dad’s day with the kids – my wife is off for her day of beauty so the girls and I are going to have some fun on our own. If the weather holds up, we may opt for some outdoor activities in the fresh air.

On Sunday, I am going kayaking and fly-fishing with two of my best friends up at Moksville Reservoir – so that will obviously be a ton of fun as well( A guys day out). The weekend will finish with a quiet, poolside BBQ at home with some friends on Monday afternoon . The beauty of the whole thing is that we will be blessed with some awesome cool Canadian air (finally!), as a real cold front is expected later today and we will see high temps only in the mid 70′s this weekend….So there…the life of a wine distributor is not always glamorous, but in good times or bad, those of us in the wine business usually know how to enjoy ourselves-even on a budget…just throw in a couple of good bottles of wine and voila!… Fun for all.

Enjoy your Labor Day weekend folks….

One of the most contentious issues in the vast literature about alcohol consumption has been the consistent finding that those who don’t drink actually tend to die sooner than those who do. The standard Alcoholics Anonymous explanation for this finding is that many of those who show up as abstainers in such research are actually former hard-core drunks who had already incurred health problems associated with drinking.

But a new paper in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research suggests that – for reasons that aren’t entirely clear – abstaining from alcohol does actually tend to increase one’s risk of dying even when you exclude former drinkers. The most shocking part? Abstainers’ mortality rates are higher than those of heavy drinkers. (See pictures of booze under a microscope.)

Moderate drinking, which is defined as one to three drinks per day, is associated with the lowest mortality rates in alcohol studies. Moderate alcohol use (especially when the beverage of choice is red wine) is thought to improve heart health, circulation and sociability, which can be important because people who are isolated don’t have as many family members and friends who can notice and help treat health problems.

But why would abstaining from alcohol lead to a shorter life? It’s true that those who abstain from alcohol tend to be from lower socioeconomic classes, since drinking can be expensive. And people of lower socioeconomic status have more life stressors – job and child-care worries that might not only keep them from the bottle but also cause stress-related illnesses over long periods. (They also don’t get the stress-reducing benefits of a drink or two after work.)

Here’s the rest of the article…

My favorite part of the article is the following line – ” Even though heavy drinking is associated with higher risk for cirrhosis and several types of cancer (particularly cancers in the mouth and esophagus), heavy drinkers are less likely to die than people who have never drunk.”….Wow…

Wow, what a birthday weekend it has been so far….Thanks in great part to friends and the perfect weather.

My birthday weekend started with some tailgating at the Jets/Redskins game with my friend Dave on Friday afternoon. We had invited some other folks, but as is usual only the “diehards” showed up…

Early tailgaters get the best spots...

Since it was a 7pm kickoff , Dave and I got to the stadium early and fired up the grill and opened a bunch of Bodega UNO wines: 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Roble, 2008 Malbec Roble and the 2007 Tempranillo Roble. The cool thing is that just the day before I finally met Francisco (who makes the Bodega UNO wines) and his wife on their first trip to NYC. Great wines always come from great people…I cannot wait to go visit them in Mendoza.

Tailgating with Bodega UNO wines...

We usually start with some munchies while we sip wine and wait for the grill to heat up. Dave brought some Parmesan, Sopressatta, Olives, chips and salsa. We managed to polish off the Bodega UNO Cabernet Roble 2007 and a good part of the Malbec before the kebabs even went on the grill. I tossed some fresh salad and we drank the Bodega UNO Tempranillo Roble 2007 with the main course, while enjoying the gorgeous afternoon sunshine in the stadium lot…To finish things off before we headed into the stadium, I popped open a bottle of the Del Rio Late Harvest Syrah 2006 that I had just received as a sample from the winery – and it was a delicious way to top things off before heading into the stadium for the kick off…the Jets D played well, as they have been lately, but the offenses performance is still worrisome to me, given the lack of production so far in the preseason. Let’s see what happens this season – Jets fans seem to have pretty high expectations…

The birthday weekend continued on Saturday ( after running errands and doing yard work all day)…

Laura and I were invited by our dear friends Alfred and Jon to a dinner party for about 15 people. Jon had also invited his sister, Louisa, who flew up from Florida to help with the menu and the festivities. As was charged with providing the wine for the occasion and I picked the Kenneth Volk Chardonnay Santa Maria Cuvee 2006 and the Del Rio Claret 2006. Laura and I also picked up a sushi platter from my brother at Flirt Sushi to provide some snacks while the food was being readied…

Jon and Alfred went overboard this time…the setting for the dinner party looked like something out of Town & Country or Food & Wine – the decor and set up was fabulous! It looked like a professional party planner had done the set up….curtains, candles, flowers….(kudos Alfred!)…just beautiful.

Dinner party with friends

The setting was in Jon and Alfred’s patio and back yard in Valhalla, on an absolutely perfect cool late summer evening – the weather could not have been better for the occasion. After an opening round of cocktails with sushi, we sat down and the food started rolling out: Vichyssoise soup; followed by a spring salad with “croquetas”. Next Louisa outdid herself and made “Txipirones en su tinta” – baby squid in their own ink (absolutely fenomal!)….Next Louisa made some sweet and succulent stuffed red peppers, “basque style”… We had to take breaks in between all of the courses to allow for digestion and some wine drinking to help the digestion along… and the fire pit was a great place to “chill” on a cool evening in between all of the courses. The main course was delayed a little, but that worked out perfectly in the long run. The Filet Mignon with the Gorgonzola sauce was ridiculously good and so worth the wait…like butter!…and we still had dessert coming! By the way, I received compliments all around on my wine choices – especially the Del Rio Claret, which went perfectly with everything from the Txipirones to the filet. The icing on the cake was spending such a memorable evening with dear friends…Thank you!

We finally made it home last night about 12:30am and passed out….today feels like a mellow recovery day and I look forward to watching the last round of the Barclay’s chillaxing on my couch…what a weekend!

Well, today was the first day we have been out showing the Ventisquero Queulat Gran Reserva wines and they are showing beautifully. I really like them….and by the way, Queulat is the name of a beautiful glacier in the Andes that gives birth to the Ventisquero River….cool huh? The whole line up of wines has wonderful new world fruit up front, but is rather old world in style and very well made….Classical…The Ventisquero Queulat Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet and Carmenere are all single vineyard wines aged in French oak (except for the Sauvignon Blanc that is stainless steel aged on the lees). All of the Queulat wines have traces of new world fruit, but are stylistically old world – The Sauvignon Blanc reminds me of a good white Graves; the Chardonnay is like an elegant white Beaune, the Merlot, blended with 15% Cabernet reminds me of a good St. Emilion and the Cabernet is also rather Bordelais…and then there’s Chile’s own true grape – Carmenere….and this one damn good! You just have to taste these and certainly don’t miss the value priced Vina Ventisquero Reserva line up that we’ve been selling in NY since March.

The Queulat wines are now available in NY!

Laurence f rom the winery is in town this week working with us and helping us get the brand kicked off in NY. On day one, today we hit a number of our top NY accounts like Bacchus Wines, Bar Americain and even we even managed to make a presentation to Lauren at Puro Wine (they only sell Chilean wines)…tomorrow we will be showing the wines in Goshen, New Paltz, Newburgh and then back into Rockland county to finish the day tasting some wine with Anthony at Velo in Nyack and enjoying some of his awesome and reasonably priced food (If you are anywhere near Nyack you owe yourself to eat at Velo)…

Where do I start…I am perhaps a little ahead of the curve in a few things including technology. Ever since I first worked on Radio Shack TRS-80s back in the early eighties, I was hooked on technology and computers for life. Today I manage about 95% of the IT needs for Rad Grapes and being so well versed in new technologies makes it easier for me to realize that there is a need for relationships with web and social media professionals in order for me and Rad Grapes to be able to keep ahead of the curve. I have been blessed with several key close advisors and collaborators on the IT/Web?Social Media side…

From almost day one, I have been blessed to know Jon Hackett who has been instrumental in the design and implementation of the Rad Grapes website and Stoned Wino. We just had another of our brainstorming meetings today regarding implementing a more direct approach to conglomerate Twitter, the Stoned Wino blog and the Rad Grapes website. As always, Jon is so far ahead of the curve that we came with some great ideas to link all of our social media and to have a more centralized approach which is easy for me to access and use, while providing better contact with our customers and followers and actually monetizing our use of social media outlets to help grow the customer base and sales for Rad Grapes.

The other person that has lately been instrumental in helping me learn and understand the new social media landscape is my sister Danica Radisic…my sister had helped me get the importance of social media in everything from customer relations, to PR, all the way to marketing and how it all interacts together. Danica also helped me set up my twitter account and get rolling with it….today, Jon and I actually had a discussion and brain storming session on updating the Rad Grapes website and linking my twitter account and Stoned Wino to the main Rad Grapes website so that we can consolidate all of the aspects of social media communication in one place and make it easier for me to use and access, all while spending a few minutes here and there posting and tweeting very effectively.

I am convinced now more than ever, especially after my meeting with Jon today, that the near future will bring us more and more integration of the web, social media, marketing, PR and customer relations as an all in one approach that can be easily and rather cheaply interwoven into a successful business strategy, that even a slightly tech savvy small business owner will be able to harness and deploy with ease. Look for some revolutionary changes and updates to the Rad Grapes website in the near future. In the meantime sign up to keep track of Rad Grapes on Twitter, our new Facebook page and of course right here at Stoned Wino. The cool thing about the upcoming changes is the fact that we are trying to integrate all of these web and social media outlets into an easy to follow format all linked via the main Rad Grapes website, so you get to keep up with all things Rad Grapes easier than ever….very cool indeed.

You are invited to the NY launch of the Vina Ventisquero Queulat wines on Monday, August 23rd between 5 and 8pm at Puro Wine, located at 161 Grand Street in Manhattan. Rad Grapes has had such success with the Vina Ventisquero Reserva line up of wines since we introduced them back into the NY market back in March of this year, that we have decided to bring in the Ventisquero Queulat wines for a late summer kick off. We will be pouring the 2009 Ventisquero Queulat Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, along side 2007 Cabernet, Merlot and Carmenere. Please come join us for a few fun hours at Puro Wine

To quote the winemaking team and how they describe the Queulat wines…”The Ventisquero Quelat wines are elegant single vineyard selections, with character, balanced and round, 100% aged in French barrels which show all the seed potential in each one of its varieties.

As its inspiring icon the Ventisquero Queulat which mixes the greatness and the delicacy of a hanging fjord surrounded by live nature, the Ventisquero Queulat is the perfect company for different foods and celebrations.

Each variety has its own personality whose origin is in the work and study
For the most suitable selection I order to bring out the best of every grape.

A balanced wine among the wood and the fruit, which combines the subtleness and strength of the Queulat Ventisquero, the most impressive hanging fjord in Chile, with the energy and dynamics of the Ventisquero vineyard and its Wine making team.”

Come see what the fuss is all about…really great wines at really great prices…How Rad are your Grapes?

We are only at the beginning of August and it already feels like its been a long, hot summer ( no shit?!)…Business in the first few days of August has been very good, but we are just playing a little catch up from a really crappy July…either way I think the hard work and all the time spent on the road lately is starting to bare fruit…

LBI beach scene right in front of the our beach house in Loveladies

Even though we realistically can’t afford much of a vacation the way business and cash flow has been lately, we are blessed with very generous Grandparents and it is thanks to Grandma and Grandpa that we get to spend some time down on LBI this year. We are off to LBI….I certainly need the time off and the R&R….fishing, boogie boarding, roasting smores on the beach, having the time to read a good book, catching some rays and spending time with friends and family on the beach, with a glass of wine – isn’t that what life is about?
